What is Host Monitoring?
Host Monitoring allows the Meter Security Appliance to check in with remote hosts via ICMP (ping) to ensure the hosts are still responding/up. Meter uses a few default remote hosts to calculate ISP quality and control WAN failover.
Host monitoring can also be used to check on the health status of remote resources (ie, AWS/Azure infrastructure, cloud VOIP providers, etc.)
Default Hosts
Meter uses these hosts by default for calculating ISP quality and controlling WAN failovers:
- 1.1.1.1
- 9.9.9.9
- 8.8.8.8
- 8.8.4.4
- 1.0.0.1
- 208.69.38.205
These can be changed or set not to be used for ISP quality calculations. Read more about WAN Failover settings and how ISP quality is calculated here: Hardware > Security Appliances [WAN and Multi-WAN configurations]
Host Monitoring Overview
To see the current status of all of your hosts, log in to dashboard.meter.com and navigate to Network > Insights > Host monitoring.
Availability
The availability of every host from the perspective of each WAN port on each Meter Security Appliance is shown here. Green indicates that all ICMP requests were responded to. Yellow or Red indicates that there was some loss. Gray indicates complete loss. A time filter is also available if more history is needed.
On the Right-hand side, each host is listed with an indication of whether it is being used for Failover calculations.
How to add a host
To add a new host, click on ‘Add custom target’.
Enabled - Toggle on to enable host monitoring for the host. If disabled, host monitoring will not run on the host.
Host - The public IP address used for the host monitoring test.
Description - Optional field for info about the host.
Use for WAN Failover - If toggled ON, this host will be used in ISP quality calculations. If toggled OFF, host monitoring will still run on this IP, but the results will not be considered for WAN Failover.
How to remove a host
To remove a host, click on the Host IP address under ‘Targets’ > Actions menu (...) > Delete
Deleting a host used for WAN Failover will alter the overall calculations for ISP Quality.
